Cooper Grabs 10 Rebounds in JSU's Loss to Southern

BATON ROUGE, La.| Zoe Cooper grabbed 10 rebounds, but the Jackson State women's basketball team fell to Southern  64-47 on the road Thursday evening.

Cooper tacked on one points to her 10-rebound game for the Tigers. Leianya Massenat helped out with eight points and seven rebounds and Taleah Dilworth chipped in with 14 points.

Jackson State did a great job disrupting Southern shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Jakiylah Esco led the way individually for the Tigers with one rejection.

How It Happened

  • After playing to a 9-9 tie early in the game, Jackson State (8-11, 6-2 SWAC) went on a 7-0 run with 3:10 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Dilworth, to take a 16-9 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
  • The Tigers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 30-25.
  • JSU's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Tigers faced a 45-35 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
  • The Tigers turned four offensive rebounds into three second chance points on the way to scoring 10 total points in the quarter.
  • Jackson State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 64-47. Jackson State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.

Inside the Numbers

  • The Tigers held the Jaguars to only 39 percent shooting from the field.
  • JSU were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording five blocks as a team.
  • Taleah Dilworth led the Tigers with 14 points.
  • Jackson State finished wth 16 points in the paint, 12 bench points, six fast break points, five second chance points and three points off of eight SU turnovers.
