Cooper Registers Season-high Rebounds, Berete, Dilworth Lead JSU's Offense in Win at Grambling State

GRAMBLING, La.| -Diaka Berete and Taleah Dilworth combined to score 42 total points in the Tigers' 67-56 victory over Grambling State on the road Saturday afternoon.

Jackson State had two players score in double figures, led by Berete, who had 26 points and six rebounds. Dilworth tacked on 16 points and Jaileyah Cotton added five points, eight rebounds and six assists.

JSU out-rebounded Grambling 45-29 in Saturday's game, led by 13 boards from Zoe Cooper, her season-high. The Tigers also grabbed 12 offensive rebounds and scored eight second chance points.

The Jackson State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 16 Grambling turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Shalance Montoya led the way individually for the Tigers with one steal.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (9-11, 7-2 SWAC) started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run, culminating in a three from Cotton, to take an early lead with 8:19 left in the first quarter. 

  • The Tigers then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 17-8 advantage. 

  • JSU relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 17 points.

  • Jackson State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 9:47 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Dilworth, to increase its lead to 22-8. 

  • JSU kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 35-21 advantage heading into halftime. 

  • Jackson State saw non-starters score 12 of its 18 total points off the bench in the quarter.

  • After the half, Jackson State held on to its advantage and owned a 47-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter. 

  • JSU played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.

  • Jackson State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Berete's three, to grow the lead to 67-51 with 46 seconds to go in the contest. 

  • Grambling State narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but JSU still cruised the rest of the way for the 67-56 win. 

  • Jackson State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 20 points.

Inside the Numbers

  • JSU shot well from three point range, knocking down nine of 20 long range attempts.

  • Jackson State held Grambling State to only 34.5 percent shooting from the field.

  • JSU never trailed after taking a 17-8 first quarter lead.

  • Jackson State shared the ball well, recording an assist on 72 percent of made baskets.

  • Diaka Berete and Taleah Dilworth carried the load for the Tigers, accounting for 63 percent of their points.

  • Jackson State had a stellar day defensively, holding Grambling State to 20 percent from three point land on 10 attempts.

  • The Jackson State bench made an impact by adding 36 points to its scoring output.

  • JSU had a 45-29 edge on the boards in the win.

  • The Jackson State defense forced 16 turnovers.\

  • JSU cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 12 offensive boards in the game.
