Defense Leads Jackson State past UAPB

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team kept UAPB to just 17.6 percent from beyond the arc in a 3-for-17 shooting performance on the way to a 76-60 victory against the Golden Lions at home Thursday.

The Tigers had three players score in double figures, led by Diaka Berete, who had 17 points and two steals. Taleah Dilworth tacked on 17 points and Leianya Massenat chipped in as well with 13 points, four assists and five steals.

Jackson State grabbed 34 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to UAPB's 27, led by nine boards from Zoe Cooper.

JSU's defense held UAPB to only 17.6 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Tigers also limited D'Arrah Allen to 1-of-9 shooting from downtown and seven points in the game. The Golden Lions did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed 18 second chance points while Jackson State cleared 25 defensive rebounds.

  • Jackson State took advantage of seven UAPB turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of takeaways.
  • JSU kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Berete's three, to grow the lead to 76-56 with 2:25 to go in the contest.
