JACKSON, Mis.| The Jackson State women's basketball team got a 30-point performance from the bench on the way to a 76-63 win against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at home Saturday.
The Tigers had four players score in double figures, led by Taleah Dilworth, who had 15 points. Jaileyah Cotton added 14 points, four assists and two steals and Tierney Kelsey helped out with 12 points and four assists off the bench.
Jackson State grabbed 40 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Mississippi Valley State's 29, led by seven boards from Zoe Cooper.
JSU forced 16 Mississippi Valley State turnovers. The Tigers turned those takeaways into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Cotton's two steals led the way for Jackson State.
How It Happened
- After playing to a 7-7 tie early in the game, Jackson State (11-11, 9-2 SWAC) went on an 8-0 run with 2:44 left in the first quarter to take a 15-7 lead.
- The Tigers then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with an 18-8 advantage.
- JSU got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for eight of its 18 total points.
- Jackson State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 7:17 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Ruthie Mbugua, to increase its lead to 30-13.
- Mississippi Valley State cut into that lead, but the Tigers still enjoyed a 33-25 advantage heading into halftime.
- Jackson State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 15 points.
- Following the half, JSU continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 42-32 before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Kelsey, to expand its lead further to 50-32 with 3:12 to go in the third.
- Before the third period was over, the Tigers added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 58-39 edge.
- Jackson State took advantage of five Mississippi Valley State turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of takeaways.
- JSU kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 70-50 with 5:01 to go in the contest.
- The Delta Devillettes narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 76-63 win.
- Jackson State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
