Jackson State Rallies from Second-half Deficit to Knock Off Bethune-Cookman 59-53

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.| The Jackson State women's basketball team fought back from a 10-point deficit at 35-25 with 7:11 remaining in the third quarter to knock off the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 59-53 on the road Thursday.

The Tigers (12-11, 10-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Taleah Dilworth, who had 15 points. Leianya Massenat added 12 points and Jaileyah Cotton helped out with 11 points and two steals.

Jackson State shared the ball well in Thursday's game, racking up 17 assists on 20 made field goals. Individually, Tierney Kelsey led the way for the Tigers with four assists.

Jackson State forced 19 Bethune-Cookman turnovers while committing 17 themselves in Thursday's game. The Tigers turned those takeaways into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Shalance Montoya's three steals led the way for Jackson State.

How It Happened

  • After playing to a 4-4 tie early in the game, Jackson State (12-11, 10-2 SWAC) went on a 6-0 run with 7:15 left in the first quarter to take a 10-4 lead.
  • The Tigers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 15-12.
  • Bethune-Cookman kept adding to that lead, building a 24-12 advantage before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from Cotton, to narrow its deficit to 24-18.
  • The Tigers continued to chip away, reducing the Bethune-Cookman lead to 28-23 heading into the break.
  • The Wildcats continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 40-33 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Massenat, to trim its deficit to 40-38 with 34 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter.
  • JSU knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 15 total points.
  • The Tigers came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Dilworth's three, to seize a 45-40 lead with 8:00 to go in the contest.
  • JSU kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 59-53 win.
  • Jackson State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 21 points.

  • The Tigers rallied from a two-point 40-38 third quarter deficit to pick up the win.
  • JSU shot well from three point range, knocking down eight of 17 long range attempts.
  • Jackson State put on a passing clinic, recording an assist on 85 percent of made field goals.
  • The Tigers had a stellar day defensively, holding Bethune-Cookman to 17 percent from three point land on 12 attempts.
  • The JSU defense forced 19 turnovers.
