OPENING KICK
- Jackson State (4-1, 2-0 SWAC) and Alabama State (4-1, 2-0 SWAC) have met 52 times in school history; however, the last season seven games in Jackson have not favored the Tigers as Alabama State has a 5-2 record in those game in Jackson including the 2023 homecoming contest.
- The two teams sit atop of the SWAC East Division with Jackson State ranked every poll.
- Ahmad Miller turned in the second-best rushing performance of the season against Hampton in the season opener with 180 yards against Hampton. He was even with Joshua Dye of Southern Utah, while Eastern Illinois quarterback Cole LaCrue rushed for nation's best 193 yards. He followed that up with another 100-yard rushing performance against Southern in his last outing - rushing for 101 - after seeing limited action against Tuskegee.
- After sitting out against Tuskegee and having two weeks off, JaCobian Morgan responded with 337 yards through the air and a pair of touchdowns against Southern in the Tigers' last outing. He was named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Week and HBCU National co-Player of the Week. He followed that up with a 314-yard passing game against Alabama A&M and 120 rushing yards in the Gulf Coast Challenge. He was named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Week, HBCU Legends National Player of the Week, FCS HBCU National Player of the Week, and BOXTOROW National Player of the Week.
- Jackson State was named the FCS HBCU National Team of the Week after its win over Southern after racking up over 500 yards of total offense and outscoring Southern 28-0 over the final 30:05 of the game.
- The Tigers had three receivers rack up 90-plus yards in the win over Southern led by Nate Rembert with 102 yards on five receptions. He was joined by Jameel Gardner Jr. with seven receptions for 96 yards and Ja'Naylon Dupree with 93 yards on five receptions. Both Rembert and Dupree had touchdown receptions in the win.
- Kam Sallis recorded his first career interception at Jackson State on the goal line to end a Southern threat, leading to the longest scoring drive of the season for the Tigers to close the half. Jackson State went 97 yards to end the half with a 51-yard touchdown reception from Dupree with just five seconds remaining. Jace Ward followed that up with is first career interception against Alabama A&M in the Gulf Coast Challenge the following week.
- Jackson State has won its last 12 games against SWAC opponents and has won 13 consecutive games against FCS competition after having its 10-game winning streak snapped by Southern Miss.
MORGAN STRIKES AGAIN, THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE WEEK FOR THE GRADUATE
JaCobian Morgan was named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Week, FCS HBCU Player of the Week, HBCU Legends National Player of the Week, and BOXTOROW National Player of the Week after his performance against Alabama A&M. It is the first time in 16 years a player has won the BOXTOROW National Player of the Week two times in one season.
PILING UP THE YARDS AFTER BACK-TO-BACK 500-YARD PERFORMANCES
Jackson State continues to rack up the yardage with back-to-back 500-yard games of total offense. They took it a step further against Alabama A&M with 704 yards.
MILLER AMONG THE NATION'S BEST
Ahmad Miller is among the nation's best through the first five games of the season, ranking among the nation's best in several categories. The redshirt sophomore is second in yards per carry [7.98], 17th in rushing yards per game [91.0], and 19th in rushing yards [455].
DEFENSE DOESN'T ALLOW MUCH AGAINST TUSKEGEE
Jackson State pitched its first shutout under head coach T.C. Taylor in a 30-0 victory over Tuskegee at the W.C. Gorden Classic, and it was also the first shutout since 2022 against Southern (Oct. 29). The Tigers held Tuskegee to just seven first downs in the win and 24 yards rushing on 20 carries. The Golden Tigers barely made it over 100 yards of total offense, finishing with 109 yards on 40 plays. The most glaring stat of the day is that Tuskegee made it past the 50-yards line just two times, with one of those coming courtesy of a personal foul.
IVORY RANKS AMONG THE NATION'S BEST DEFENSIVELY
Quincy Ivory ranks among the nation's best through the first three games of the season. He is ranked 19th in the nation in sacks, and second in the SWAC, with 0.80 per game. He ranks just behind Ckelby Givens of Southern [1.30]. He also ranks sixth in tackles for loss and second in the SWAC.
