Jackson State Sweeps Alabama State at Home

Jackson, Miss.| The Jackson State team volleyball turned in a complete performance in front of its home crowd Friday evening, sweeping Alabama State 3–0 (25–20, 25–23, 25–19) inside the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.

Jackson State (4–11, 3–2 SWAC) was sharp on both sides of the ball, hitting .312 as a team while holding the visiting Hornets to a .110 attack percentage. Jackson State finished with 45 kills, 41 assists, and six team blocks — all while committing just one ball-handling error in the match.

Jayden James led the attack once again with 14 kills, three service aces, and eight digs for a match-high, notching her 1,000th career kill. Katejion Robinson continued her efficient play at the net, adding nine kills on .667 hitting, while Kyra Dove was dominant in the middle with six kills (.556) and a solo block.

Hope Briggs contributed five kills and three total blocks, while Cierra Gilbert added five kills, three block assists, and a steady presence in the middle.

From the setting position, Karys Dove (18 assists, 4 digs, 1 ace) and Naija Gadis (16 assists, 3 digs, 1 kill) distributed the offense with precision, allowing Jackson State to maintain rhythm throughout. Kymorah Carter anchored the back row with five digs and one ace, while Maya Reeves added 10 digs and a key assist off the bench

 

How It Happened

  • The Tigers started fast, using early kills from James and Robinson to grab control.
  • Alabama State opened with back-to-back aces, but JSU settled in behind Dove's quick sets and Gilbert's front-row defense.
  • A late 6–0 run, highlighted by back-to-back blocks from Hope Briggs, closed out the set. Jackson State hit .273 in the frame while holding the Hornets to just .059.
  • Set two featured tighter exchanges and several lead changes.
  • James tallied five kills in the frame, while Kyra Dove and Makenzie Washington added timely swings in the middle.
  • Down 21–20, JSU responded with three straight points, capped by a James kill and a service ace from Dove, to retake control and hold on for the 25–23 victory.
  • Jackson State's offense hit full stride, producing a .429 attack percentage in the clinching set.
  • James and Robinson paced the attack, while Carter and Reeves steadied the back row.
  • Dove's service ace at 8–8 helped spark a 6–1 run, and Briggs' final kill sealed the sweep as JSU finished the match with 16 kills in the set.
