JSU Sweeps Grambling State on the Road

Grambling, La.| The Jackson State volleyball team earned its fifth straight Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) win Sunday afternoon, breezing past Grambling State 3–0 (25–23, 25–19, 26–24) at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

Inside the Numbers
Jackson State controlled the pace for most of the afternoon, outhitting Grambling .245 to .075 and finishing with advantages in kills (39–29), blocks (11–7), and digs (47–35).

Outside hitter Jayden James led the charge with 14 kills, 11 digs, and three block assists for her sixth double-double of the season. 

Middle blocker Kyra Dove added eight kills on .467 hitting with five total blocks, while Katejion Robinson chipped in eight kills.

Setters Naija Gadis (17 assists, five digs, two aces) and Karys Dove (10 assists, one ace) kept the offense balanced, while Kymorah Carter anchored the back row with seven digs and a service ace.

Defensively, Kamiera Watkins and Cierra Gilbert combined for nine total blocks, including six from Watkins.

How It Happened

  • The opening set was a back-and-forth battle featuring 11 ties and two lead changes. 
  • JSU took early control behind kills from Cierra Gilbert and Jayden James, jumping out 4–1.
  • After trailing 19–17, Jackson State surged behind James and Katejion Robinson, who combined for three straight points. 
  • At 22–22, Kyra Dove's kill and a Robinson finish gave JSU set point, and Makenzie Washington sealed it 25–23 with a cross-court kill from Karys Dove.
  • The JSU Tigers hit .154 in the second set and used strong serving to break away late. Naija Gadis served back-to-back aces during a 5–0 run that pushed the lead to 14–10.
  • Kyra Dove and Cierra Gilbert dominated at the net with key blocks to hold Grambling to a negative hitting percentage (-.094). 
  • Kymorah Carter's ace extended the advantage to 20–13, and Dove's kill closed out the frame, 25–19.
  • Grambling threatened to extend the match, leading 17–14 before Jayden James and Kyra Dove sparked a comeback.
  • JSU tied it at 22 after a Gilbert block and a James ace, then closed with a 4–2 run.
  • Katejion Robinson recorded two late kills, and Carter's serve forced a Grambling attack error to end the match, 26–24.

Up Next
The Tigers will travel to Pine Bluff, Ark. to take on UAPB on Monday afternoon. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
