Jackson, Miss.| The Jackson State soccer team continued its strong start to Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play with a 2–0 win over Texas Southern Friday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Field.
How It Happened
After a scoreless first half,
Jackson State (4–5–2, 3–0–0 SWAC) struck twice in quick succession after the break. Defender Zaniyah Gonzague broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute with her first career goal.
Just four minutes later, midfielder
Ryanne Hawthorn-Harper doubled the advantage in the 67th minute, finishing a sequence assisted by
Caylah Williams and
Alayla Jackson.
Goalkeeper
Taylor Osborn anchored the defense with seven saves, earning her third consecutive shutout in conference play. The back line, led by
Sarah Portis,
Kianah Farmer, and
Makayla Sturkey, held Texas Southern to nine shots overall and denied multiple second-half efforts.
Inside the Numbers
- Zaniyah Gonzague and Ryanne Hawthorn-Harper both scored goals in the match, both assisted by Caylah Williams while Alayla Jackson assisted on the second goal as well.
- Taylor Osborn picked up another shutout win for the Tigers while recording seven saves in the match.
- Kaila Tablado finished with four shots, while Sarah Portis registered two, and Farmer, Day, Jackson, Olaco each recorded one.
