Jackson State Holds Off Southern to Claim SWAC Regular Season Title

Jackson, Miss.| The Jackson State women's soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Southern University on Thursday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Complex, extending the Tigers' unbeaten streak in SWAC play to six matches.

JSU claimed the SWAC Regular Season Championship with the win.

Forward Caylah Williams scored the match's only goal in the 20th minute, finishing off a feed from defender Sarah Portis. The early strike proved to be enough, as goalkeeper Taylor Osborn recorded her sixth clean sheet of the season, stopping all three Southern shots on goal.

Jackson State dominated possession and offensive chances throughout the match, outshooting the Jaguars 18–3 and holding a 10–3 edge in shots on goal. JSU also earned 10 corner kicks to Southern's three.

How It Happened
  • Jackson State came out aggressive from the opening whistle, registering four corner kicks in the first 18 minutes.
  • Ryanne Hawthorn-Harper and Alayla Jackson both fired early shots that were turned away by Southern goalkeeper Ava Droze.
  • At 19:41, JSU broke through off a build-up starting from the back line, Portis sent a low pass into space, and Williams slotted the finish into the right side of the net for her fifth goal of the season, giving Jackson State a 1–0 lead.
  • Southern's Elon Stinson was booked just five seconds before the goal, one of four yellow cards issued to the visitors.
  • JSU nearly doubled its lead minutes later when Alayla Jackson's shot from the right side forced another save from Droze.
  • The Tigers maintained control, holding the Jaguars without a shot for the entire first half while earning seven corner kicks.
  • Jackson State kept up the pressure early in the second period with shots from Kaila Tablado, Asia Wilson, and Zaniyah Gonzague, all saved by Droze.
  • Southern recorded its first shot on goal in the 58th minute, but Osborn made a comfortable save to preserve the lead.
  • She later added two more stops on back-to-back attempts at the 71st and 79th minutes.
  • Both teams traded fouls in a physical final stretch.
  • Despite a late push from the Jaguars, Jackson State's back line — anchored by Portis, Greer, and Gonzague — kept the clean sheet intact.
