Tigers Fall to Arkansas State

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team shot 50 percent from three-point range, but fell to the Arkansas State Red Wolves 75-69 at home Sunday.

Jackson State (1-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Rhema Pegues, who had 21 points. Jaileyah Cotton tacked on 12 points and Leianya Massenat helped out with 11 points.

Mikayla Brown pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Jackson State, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into 14 second chance points.

Jackson State forced 19 Arkansas State turnovers. The Tigers turned those takeaways into 12 points on the other end of the floor. Camryn O'Neil's five steals led the way for Jackson State.

How It Happened

  • After falling behind 2-0, Jackson State went on a 10-0 run with 8:44 left in the first quarter to take a 10-2 lead.
  • The Tigers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 25-23.
  • Arkansas State kept adding to that lead, building a 32-23 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Pegues, to narrow its deficit to 32-28.
  • Arkansas State responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Tigers trailing 45-37 heading into halftime.
  • JSU started to cut into the deficit after halftime, bringing it to 55-52 by the end of the third quarter.
  • Jackson State took advantage of five Arkansas State turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.
  • Arkansas State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 66-57 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 66-62 with 5:06 to go in the contest.
  • The Red Wolves responded and outscored the Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 75-69.
  • JSU took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.

  • Arkansas State finished with 36 points in the paint, 32 bench points, 16 points off of 19 JSU turnovers, 14 second chance points, and 11 fast break points.

The Tigers will travel to Conway, S.C. to compete in the Coastal Carolina Tournament on Friday and Saturday. JSU will face Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. on Friday.
