Jackson State Opens 2025-26 Campaign with Dominate Win Over MUW

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team held Mississippi University for Women to just 15 percent from beyond the arc in a 3-for-20 shooting performance on the way to a 117-40 win over the Owls at home Monday.

The Tigers (1-0) had seven players score in double figures, led by Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua, who had 19 points. Angel Wilkinson tacked on 16 points, four assists and four steals off the bench and Derrica McCall helped out with 16 points and six steals.

Jackson State grabbed 62 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Mississippi University for Women's 25, led by 12 boards from McKenzie Stewart. The Tigers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 32 rebounds into 30 second chance points.

The JSU defense was a problem in Monday's game, forcing 36 Mississippi University for Women turnovers while committing 17. Those takeaways turned into 50 points on the offensive end of the floor. McCall's six steals led the way individually for the Tigers.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State started out the scoring by going on an 11-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Rhema Pegues, to take an early lead with 7:07 left in the first quarter.
  • The Tigers then added 22 points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 42-9 advantage. Jackson State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 42 points.
  • JSU kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 9:39 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Skyler Christmas, to increase its lead to 52-9.
  • The Tigers proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 63-19 advantage heading into halftime.
  • The Tigers dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 21 points close to the basket.
  • Following intermission, Jackson State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 75-25 before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Wilkinson, to expand its lead further to 83-25 with 1:28 to go in the third.
  • Before the third period was over, the Tigers added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 85-26 edge.
  • Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 22 points in the paint.
  • JSU kept widening that lead, expanding it to 102-40 before going on a 15-0 run, finished off by Wilkinson's layup, to grow the lead to 117-40 with 12 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
  • The Tigers took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 32 points in the paint.
