Jackson State Falls to Tennessee Tech After Losing Halftime Lead

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team went into halftime beating Tennessee Tech 21-17, but could not pull away in the second half and fell 59-53 to the Golden Eagles at home Friday.

Jackson State (1-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua, who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Leianya Massenat added 15 points and Jaileyah Cotton added five points, four assists and four steals.

Tcheuhchoua pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Jackson State, grabbing 14 boards and turning them into 10 second chance points.

The Jackson State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Friday's game, forcing 23 Tennessee Tech turnovers while committing 19. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the offensive end of the floor. Cotton's four steals led the way individually for the Lady Tigers.

How It Happened

  • After falling behind 2-0, Jackson State went on a 6-0 run with 6:48 left in the first quarter to take a 6-2 lead.
  • The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 10-8 advantage.
  • Jackson State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 10 points close to the basket.
  • Tennessee Tech rallied to take a 15-14 lead before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run starting at the 5:32 mark in the second period to take a 20-15 lead.
  • The Golden Eagles cut into that lead, but the Tigers still enjoyed a 21-17 advantage heading into halftime.
  • JSU dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 11 points close to the basket.
  • Jackson State then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Golden Eagles 41-36 entering the fourth.
  • The Tigers played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.
  • Tennessee Tech kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 50-40 advantage before Jackson State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Tcheuhchoua's layup, to shrink the deficit to 50-47 with 4:22 to go in the contest.
  • The Golden Eagles responded and outscored the Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 59-53.
  • Jackson State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 17 points in the paint.
