Jackson State Falls to Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.| The Jackson State women's basketball team got a 14-point showing from the bench, but fell 86-43 to Illinois on the road Friday.

Mikayla Brown led the Tigers (2-8) with seven points and 10 rebounds. Leianya Massenat added nine points and Rhema Pegues helped out with eight points.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (2-8) fell behind 14-0 before Derrica McCall knocked down a deep three to put the Tigers on the board at 3:25.
  • Leianya Massenat immediately drove down the court to score on a fastbreak layup adding two more on the board for JSU.
  • Illinois (11-1) carried a 20-point advantage into the second quarter.
  • JSU continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 47-10 halftime deficit.
  • Illinois continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 51-10 advantage before Jackson State went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Massenat, to trim its deficit to 51-17 with 6:33 to go in the third.
  • The Tigers were unable to cut further into the deficit, but did not cede ground to Illinois either and entered the fourth quarter trailing 64-30.
  • JSU knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 20 total points.
  • The Tigers could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 86-43.
  • Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its 13 total points.

  • The Tigers put on a passing clinic, recording an assist on 60 percent of made baskets.
  • The Jackson State bench made an impact by scoring 14 points to its scoring output.
