Jackson State drops last non-conference matchup at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala.| The Jackson State women's basketball team out-rebounded the Auburn Tigers 38-29, but fell 64-48 on the road Monday afternoon in its last non-conference matchup.

The JSU Tigers had two players score in double figures, led by Leianya Massenat, who had 15 points. Rhema Pegues tacked on 10 points and Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua added eight points.

Jackson State grabbed 38 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Auburn's 29, led by seven boards from Mikayla Brown. JSU also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 17 rebounds into 15 second chance points.

Jackson State forced 14 Auburn turnovers, turning hose takeaways into 14 points on the other end of the floor. 

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (2-10) played Auburn close early on, tying the game at four with a layup from Derrica McCall.
  • Auburn (11-4) built on its lead and carried a 22-12 lead into the second quarter.
  • JSU cut away at Auburn's lead to 31-24 before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Massenat, to narrow its deficit to 31-29.
  • Auburn responded and expanded its advantage, leaving the JSU Tigers trailing 40-33 heading into halftime.
  • Jackson State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and it faced a 49-37 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
  • JSU played well near the basket, scoring two of its four points in the paint.
  • The JSU Tigers could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 64-48.
  • Jackson State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 11 points.

  • Jackson State shot 80 percent (8-for-10) from the free throw line and 32.1 percent (17-for-53) from the field.
  • The JSU Tigers finished with 22 points in the paint, 15 second chance points, 14 points off of 14 Auburn turnovers, four fast break points and two bench points.
  • Auburn shot 44.9 percent (22-for-49) from the field and 66.7 percent (12-for-18) from the free throw line.
  • Mya Petticord lead the way for Auburn with 21 points, while Ja'Mia Harris and Sania Richardson finished with 12 points each.
  • The Auburn Tigers recorded 34 bench points, 24 points in the paint, 16 points off of 22 JSU turnovers, 12 fast break points and five second chance points.
