JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team kept Alcorn State to just 19 percent from deep in a 4-for-21 shooting performance, but fell 49-45 to the Braves at home Saturday.
Mikayla Brown led the Tigers with six points, nine rebounds and two steals. Leianya Massenat tacked on five points and eight rebounds and Jaileyah Cotton chipped in as well with seven points.
Jackson State pulled down 40 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Alcorn State's 28, led by Brown's nine boards. The Tigers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 13 rebounds into 11 second chance points.
The JSU defense held Alcorn State shooters to only 34 percent from the field, including 19 percent from three-point range. The Braves did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only eight offensive rebounds and scored six second chance points while Jackson State pulled down 27 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
- After falling behind 11-7, Jackson State (2-11, 0-1 SWAC) went on a 6-0 run with 1:56 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Derrica McCall, to take a 13-11 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
- The Tigers relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 13 points.
- JSU kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 8:28 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Brown, to increase its lead to 18-11.
- The Braves cut into that lead, but the Tigers still enjoyed a 24-23 advantage heading into halftime.
- Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 11 points close to the basket.
- Alcorn State then took a 30-24 lead following intermission before JSU went on a 10-0 run to grab a 34-30 lead with 2:14 to go in the third.
- Before the third period was over, the Tigers added four points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 41-33 edge.
- Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.
- Alcorn State then erased the Tigers' lead in the game's final quarter for a 49-45 comeback victory.
- Jackson State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring four of its four points in the paint.

- The Braves finished with 26 points in the paint, 181 points off of 18 JSU turnovers, seven bench points, six second chance points and five fast brek points.
