HATTIESBURG, Miss.| The Jackson State softball team couldn't complete the comeback as the Tigers fell 5-4 on the road to Southern Miss Wednesday afternoon.
Jorgina Gant (2-1) got the ball to start for Jackson State and took the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jackson State (7-2) trailed 5-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board.
- The Tigers plated a run on a bases-loaded walk by Meah Almaraz.
- JSU kept the deficit at 5-1 before closing the gap further in the sixth.
- Jackson State picked up two more runs when a single from Valerie Joaquin scored Julie Lopez and Gabrielle Willis, which tightened the Eagles lead to 5-3.
- The Tigers kept the Eagles off the board before narrowing the gap to 5-4 in the seventh.
- The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short.

- Jackson State's highest scoring inning was the sixth, when it pushed two runs across.\
- The Tigers out-hit the Eagles at a 9-3 clip.
- Jackson State's pitchers limited Southern Miss to just 1-for-6 (.167) with runners in scoring position.
- JSU's pitchers faced 25 Southern Miss hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out two.
- Joaquin led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-2 with an RBI.
- Southern Miss was led offensively by Madison Moak, who went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI.
- Natalie Herrington led the Eagles pitching staff, throwing 4.1 innings of one-run ball.

The Tigers are set to host their annual Capital City Classic at the JSU Softball Field on Saturday and Sunday. The Tigers will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Tuskegee at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, and Grambling State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday.
