JSU Strolls Past Grambling State, River City Classic Canceled Due to Weather

JACKSON, Miss. | The Jackson State softball team opened day two of the Capital City Classic with a win over Grambling State Sunday morning. The Tigers advance to 10-2 on the season. The remaining games in the tournament were canceled due to inclement weather.

How It Happened
  • Jackson State started scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Valeria Joaquin walked with a bases loaded situation that brought Jace Jackson home.
  • Ka'Liyah Gipson led off with a bunt in the bottom of the third inning to get the Tigers bats started.
  • Jackson reached first on a fielder's choice that brought Gipson home helping JSU to a 2-0 advantage by the end of the third.
  • The Tigers pushed two more runs across in the fourth
  • Grambling State got on the board in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from Cadashia Collins that scored.
  • JSU responded in the bottom of the sixth with a single to center field from Meah Almaraz that scored Courtney Little.
  • Jackson State held on to its 5-1 lead as the Tigers secured the win.

  • Jorgina Grant (3-1) got the win in the circle for JSU.
  • Jordan Hodge (0-1) took the loss in the circle for GSU.
  • Grant faced 24 GSU batters and only allowed two hits through seven innings.
  • Jackson State finished with six hits, five runs and one error in the game.
  • Ariana Murrillo led JSU at the plate with two hits.
  • Courtney Little, Meah Almaraz, Jace Jackson, and Valerie Joaquin each registered an RBI in the game.
