Atlanta, Ga.| The Jackson State women's basketball team held Grambling to just 17.6 percent from deep in a 3-for-17 shooting performance on the way to a 57-47 win ocer the GSU at The Gateway Center Arena Thursday evening.
The Tigers (16-14) had three players score in double figures, led by Leianya Massenat, who had 18 points. Diaka Berete added 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals off the bench and Taleah Dilworth chipped in as well with 12 points and four steals.
Berete pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Jackson State, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 12 second chance points.
The Jackson State defense was a problem in Thursday's game, forcing 18 Grambling turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Dilworth's four steals led the way individually for the Tigers.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (16-14) opened the game going on a 9-0 run with 8:08 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Massenat, to take a 9-4 lead.
- JSU then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-13 advantage.
- Jackson State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 17 points.
- The navy and white kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 2:56 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Berete, to increase its lead to 31-20, a score that would hold until halftime.
- JSU was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 14 points.
- After the half, Jackson State held on to its advantage and owned a 39-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
- JSU went on to score six of its eight points in the paint.
- Grambling State proceeded to take a 40-39 lead before Jackson State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Massenat's jumper, to seize a 47-40 lead with 5:04 to go in the contest.
- JSU kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 57-47 win.
