Tiger pitchers strike out 28 in doubleheader split on Friday

JACKSON, Miss. | Six Jackson State pitchers combined to strike out 28 Grambling State batters on Friday, splitting a doubleheader with a victory in the nightcap on Braddy Field.

Jackson State (15-10, 3-5 SWAC) struck out 10 batters in the opening 8-1 loss to Grambling State (11-14, 6-2 SWAC) before closing out the night with 18 from three different pitchers in a 6-3 victory. In the opener, Brandon Haston (1-4) suffered the loss in the start working 7.0 innings allowing three runs (two earned) while scattering seven hits and recording eight strikeouts. Miles Thomas and Nkosi Didder each struck out one in relief for the Tigers. Meanwhile, in the nightcap, Eric Elliott (4-0) struck out 13 hitters in 6.0 innings while allowing just two hits, his second consecutive conference game with double-digit strikeouts. CJ Lewis picked up one strikeout in 1.1 innings, and Erick Gonzalez picked up his first save of the season with four strikeouts in 1.2 innings including a game-ending strikeout.

In the opener, Jackson State was held to just six hits with Joseph Eichelbeger leading the way finising 2-for-4. Meanwhile, in the nightcap, Anthony Brown led Jackson State at the plate going 3-for-4 with double, run scored and an RBI. Ledy Alvarez finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and Hederick Torres finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Tigers who picked up 10 hits in the win.

  • 5th inning - Chenar Brown flied out to cf, SF, RBI; Jaylyn Bennett scored, Grambling State 1-0.
  • 5th inning - Alvarez singled through the left side, advanced to second on the throw, RBI; Tyshon Patty advanced to second, advanced to third on the throw; Torres scored, 1-1.
  • 6th inning - Chris Marcellus doubled to right field, RBI; Keanu Jacobs-Guishard scored, unearned. Martavius Thomas reached on an error by p, bunt; Marcellus advanced to third, scored on an error by p, Grambling State 3-1.
  • 8th inning - Nyan Hayes singled through the left side, RBI; Thomas advanced to second; Marcellus scored. Cameron Hill singled through the left side, RBI; Hayes advanced to third; Thomas scored. Brown doubled to left field, 2 RBI; Hill scored; Hayes scored. Aries Gardner singled through the left side, RBI; Brown scored, Grambling State 8-1.

How it Happened - Game 2

  • 1st inning - Wilbert Perez hit by pitch, RBI; Eichelberger advanced to second; Alvarez advanced to third; Jordan McCladdie scored, Jackson State 1-0.
  • 4th inning - Torres singled through the left side, RBI; Arjun Huerta scored, Jackson State 2-0.
  • 7th inning - McCladdie stole second; Brown scored on an error by c. Eichelberger flied out to rf, SF, RBI; McCladdie scored. Perez singled up the middle, RBI; Alvarez scored, Jackson State 5-0.
  • 8th inning - Trey Bridges homered to left field, 2 RBI; Gardner scored. Thomas singled through the left side, advanced to second on the throw, RBI; Marcellus advanced to third; Shannon Martin scored, Jackson State 5-3.
  • 8th inning - Brown doubled down the lf line, RBI; Torres advanced to third; Robert Tate Jr. scored, Jackson State 6-3.
