JSU Secures Victory Against UAPB After Halftime Tie

PINE BLUFF, Ark.| The Jackson State women's basketball team went into the halftime break tied with UAPB at 29, but took control in the second half to defeat the Golden Lions 74-65 on the road Thursday.

The Tigers had two players score in double figures, led by Taleah Dilworth, who had 26 points. Leianya Massenat tacked on 19 points and Zoe Cooper added five points and 14 rebounds.

Jackson State out-rebounded Arkansas-Pine Bluff 39-37 in Thursday's game, led by Cooper's 14 boards. The Tigers also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second chance points.

How It Happened

  • After falling behind 5-0, Jackson State(15-13, 13-4 SWAC) went on a 9-0 run with 8:44 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Dilworth, to take a 9-5 lead.
  • The Tigers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 18-17.
  • UAPB kept adding to that lead, building a 20-17 advantage before Jackson State went on a 10-0 run to take a 27-20 lead.
  • The Golden Lions then battled back to even it up at 29-29 heading into halftime.
  • JSU was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 12 points.
  • After the half, Arkansas-Pine Bluff snatched a 33-31 lead before Jackson State answered back by going on an 8-0 run to grab a 39-33 lead with 7:17 to go in the third.
  • The Tigers held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 58-52 edge.
  • JSU scored eight fast break points in the quarter.
  • Jackson State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 74-65 with nine seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
  • The Tigers took advantage of two UAPB turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.

Inside the Numbers 

  • Jackson State put on a passing clinic, recording an assist on 74 percent of made field goals.
  • Taleah Dilworth and Leianya Massenat carried the load for the Tigers, accounting for 61 percent their points.
  • The Tigers had a 39-37 edge on the boards in the win.
  • JSU cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 14 offensive boards in the game.
  • Jackson State shot 80.8 percent (21-for-26) from the free throw line and 40.4 percent (23-for-57) from the field.
  • The Tigers finished with 24 points in the paint, 18 fast break points, 15 bench points, 14 second channce points, and 13 points off of 10 UAPB turnovers.
