Jackson State Falls in Regular Season Finale

ITTA BENA, Miss.| Zoe Cooper collected 13 rebounds, but the Jackson State women's basketball team fell to the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils 70-68 on the road Saturday.

Cooper tacked on four points to her 13-rebound game for the Tigers. Jaileyah Cotton helped out with 14 points and five assists and Leianya Massenat chipped in with 18 points.

Led by Cooper's four offensive rebounds, Jackson State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.

Jackson State did a great job disrupting Mississippi Valley State shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Cooper's three rejections led the way individually for the Tigers.

How It Happened

  • After falling behind 17-11, Jackson State (15-14, 13-5 SWAC) went on a 5-0 run with 2:04 left in the first quarter to narrow its deficit to 17-16.
  • Mississippi Valley State answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Tigers down 19-16 entering the second quarter.
  • The Tigers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 38-34 halftime deficit.
  • JSU came out of halftime on fire, going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Massenat, to grab a 40-38 lead with 8:44 to go in the third.
  • Mississippi Valley State responded to seize a 53-46 lead entering the fourth quarter.
  • Jackson State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 12 total points.
  • Mississippi Valley State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 59-48 advantage before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Jakiylah Esco's layup, to shrink the deficit to 59-54 with 6:09 to go in the contest.
  • The Tigers kept their comeback going, but Mississippi Valley State managed to hold on for the 70-68 win.
