GULFPORT, Miss.| The Jackson State softball team took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 2-1 win over Alabama State on Thursday afternoon.
Brooklyn Morris (12-8) started in the circle and picked up the win for Jackson State. The left-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits.
At the plate, the Tigers were paced by Mari Stephens, who went 1-for-1 on the day with two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jackson State (28-22) got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning.
- Ka'Liyah Gipson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Jackson State and get them on the board.
- The Hornets failed to push any runs across before the Tigers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning.
- JSU scored once on a run-scoring single off the bat of Ariana Murillo, which brought the Tigers lead to 2-0.
- Alabama State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Jackson State still held on for the 2-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Tigers out-hit the Hornets at a 5-4 clip.
- Jackson State went 3-for-7 (.429) with runners in scoring position.
- Morris faced 24 Alabama State hitters in the game, allowing 12 ground balls and six fly balls.
- Stephens led the Tigers at the plate, going 1 for 1.
- Alabama State was led offensively by Jaibriel Terrell, who went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
- Kohana Pousson led the Hornets pitching staff, throwing 4.2 shutout innings.
