Pegues Drops 20 Points in JSU's Win Over Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Jackson State women's basketball team added its first conference win of the season to the column after outlasting Alabama State on the road Saturday afternoon. The Tigers defeated the Hornets 62-54.

How It Happened
  • Jackson State (3-12, 1-2 SWAC) got on the board first with a jumper from Mikayla Brown.
  • Alabama State (5-10, 2-3 SWAC) jumped ahead taking a 7-2 lead over the Tigers with 7:06 in the first quarter.
  • The Tigers took an 10-9 lead at the 1:50 mark powered by a fast break layup from Jada Patton.
  • The Hornets responded immediately as JSU trailed by one going into the second quarter.
  • After a tied game at 14 the Tigers took control at 8:15 with a three-point dagger from Rhema Pegues and never trailed the rest of the half.
  • Camryn O'Neil scored at the buzzer to help Jacckson State to a 37-26 advantage going into the half.
  • A steal from Leianya Massnat and a good fast break layup from Angel Wilkinson increased JSU's lead to open the third quarter.
  • The Tigers took their largest lead of the game (18) at 7:59 in the third quarter as Pegues scored on a layup in the paint.
  • Jada Patton and Massenat's contributions in the second half of the quarter guided JSU to 52-42 advantage going into the fourth.
  • Massenat opened the scoring in the fourth for JSU assisting the Tigers to a 12-point lead.
  • After Pegues' two free throws, JSU went scoreless for roughly five minutes as Alabama State began to narrow its deficit. 
  • With 2:05 left in regulation, the Hornets closed in on the Tigers making it a five-point game, 57-52.
  • JSU's leading scorer stepped up and knocked down her first three of the quarter increasing JSU's lead to eight.
  • Massenat's two free throws closed it out for the Tigers as JSU sealed the 62-54 victory.

  • Jackson State shot 43.1 percent (22-for-51) from the field and 11-for-18 (61 percent) from the free throw line.
  • Rhema Pegues led JSU offense with 20 points in the game going 5-for-7 from deep and 3-for-4 from the free throw line.
  • She also added four rebounds, tthree assists and two steals.
  • Leianya Massenat recorded 18 points, three assists and a steal on the day.
  • The Tigers finished with 30 points in the paint, 24 bench points, 16 points off of 21 ASU turnovers, 15 second chance points, and four fast break points.
  • Alabama State shot 37.5 percent (18-for-48) from the field and 16-for31 (51.6 percent) from the free throw line.
  • Shamya Reed and Ny'Keria Flowers led the way for ASU each finishing with 13 points.
  • Clearia Peterson notched 12 rebounds for the black and gold.
  • The Hornets finished with 26 points in the paint, 15 points off of 21 JSU turnovers, 12 second chance points, 10 bench points, and eight fast break points.
