JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team got a 23-point performance from the bench, but fell 60-46 to Texas Southern at home Thursday night.
Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua put together a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the JSUÂ Tigers. Rhema Pegues also added six points, six rebounds and four assists and Jaileyah Cotton helped out with six points.
Led by Tcheuhchoua's seven offensive rebounds, Jackson State pulled down 18 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.
JSU's defense held Texas Southern to only 31.6 percent shooting from the field. The Tigers did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with nine offensive rebounds and managed eight second chance points.
How It Happened
- After falling behind 12-5, Jackson State (3-13, 1-3 SWAC) went on a 5-0 run with 2:30 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Tcheuhchoua, to narrow its deficit to 12-10, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
- Texas Southern kept adding to that lead, building a 23-15 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Derrica McCall, to narrow its deficit to 23-20.
- TSU responded and expanded its lead, leaving JSU trailing 36-24 heading into halftime.
- Jackson State's deficit continued to grow after halftime as the JSU Tigers faced a 46-32 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
- Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring six of its eight points in the paint.
- Jackson State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 60-46.
- JSU fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.
