Wilkinson Leads JSU's Offense with 18 Points, Three Tigers Register Double Figures

JACKSON, Miss.| Angel Wilkinson led the the Jackson State women's basketball team with 18 points and eight rebounds against Prairie View A&M. The Tigers got a 22-point performance from the bench on the way to a 62-43 victory over the Panthers at home Saturday afternoon.

Jackson State (4-13, 2-3 SWAC) had three players score in double figures, led by Angel Wilkinson, who had 18 points and eight rebounds. Jaileyah Cotton added 15 points, seven assists and two steals and Rhema Pegues chipped in as well with 11 points, six rebounds and four steals.

Jackson State out-rebounded Prairie View A&M 52-26 in Saturday's game, paced by 16 boards from Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua. The Tigers also grabbed 21 offensive rebounds and scored 16 second chance points.

The JSU defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 17 Prairie View A&M turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Pegues' four steals led the way individually for the Lady Tigers.

How It Happened

  • After falling behind 2-0, Jackson State went on a 6-0 run with 8:40 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Cotton, to take a 6-2 lead.
  • The Tigers then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 17-9 advantage.
  • JSU capitalized on six Prairie View A&M turnovers in the period, turning them into five points on the other end of the floor.
  • Jackson State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 4:29 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Tcheuhchoua, to increase its lead to 29-16.
  • The Panthers cut into that lead, but the Tigers cruised to a 29-18 advantage heading into halftime.
  • Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 12 points close to the basket.
  • JSU continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Wilkinson, to expand its lead further to 47-35 with 17 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter.
  • Jackson State kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Pegues' jumper, to grow the lead to 62-43 with three seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.

  • Jackson State shot 71.4 percent (5-for-7) from the field and 36.2 percent (25-for-69) from the field.
  • The Tigers finished with 26 points in the paint, 22 bench points, 20 points off of 17 PVAMU turnovers, 16 second chance points, and 13 fastbreak points.
  • Prairie View A&M shot 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from the free throw line and 28.6 percent (16-for-56) from the field.
  • CJ Wilson led PVAMU's offense with 18 points while tacking on five rebounds.
  • The Panthers finished with 20 points off of20 JSU turnovers, 18 points in the paint, 10 bench points, seven fastbreak points, and five second chance points,
