Jackson State Outlasts Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.| The Jackson State women's basketball team closed out its Flordia swing on a high note outlasting Bethune-Cookman on the road. The Tigers kept kept the Wildcats to just 20 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-10 shooting performance on the way to a 52-46 win Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers had two players score in double figures, led by Rhema Pegues, who had 10 points and two steals. Jaileyah Cotton tacked on 10 points and four assists and Angel Wilkinson added six points and five steals.

Jackson State out-rebounded Bethune-Cookman 43-34 in Saturday's game, led by 10 boards from Mikayla Brown. JSU also grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second chance points.

The Tigers forced 20 Bethune-Cookman turnovers and turned those takeaways into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Wilkinson's five steals led the way for Jackson State.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (5-14, 3-4 SWAC) opened the game going on a 15-0 run with 8:05 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua, to take a 16-2 lead.
  • The Tigers entered the quarter break with an 18-5 advantage.
  • JSU relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 18 points.
  • The Tigers maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 28-15 edge.
  • Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 10 points close to the basket.
  • Following the half, JSU held on to its advantage and owned a 39-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Tigers knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 11 total points.
  • Jackson State coasted to the win from there, increasing their margin of victory by outscoring the Wildcats 13-12 in the fourth quarter. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Jackson State shot 70 percent (7-for-10) from the free throw line and 31.7 percent (19-for-60) from the field.
  • The Tigers finished with 18 points in the paint, 18 bench points, 14 points off of 20 B-CU turnovers, 14 second chance points and four fast break points.
  • Bethune-Cookman shot 61.6 percent (8-for-13) from the free throw line and 35.3 percent (18-for-51) from the field.
  • The Wildcats were led by Madison Holden who finished with 20 points and Sanai Tyler who registered 13 rebounds.
  • B-CU picked up 20 points in the paint, 17 points off of 20 JSU turnovers, 16 second chance points, six second chance points, and three fast break points.
