JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team out-rebounded the Southern Jaguars 40-34, but fell 67-43 at home Thursday.
The Tigers had two players score in double figures, led by Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua, who had 10 points and eight rebounds. Jaileyah Cotton added 10 points and two steals and Derrica McCall added four points and three steals.
Tcheuhchoua pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Jackson State, grabbing 24 boards and turning them into 13 second chance points.
The JSU defense was a problem in Thursday's game, forcing 21 Southern turnovers. Those takeaways turned into six points on the offensive end of the floor. McCall's three steals led the way individually for the Tigers.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (5-15, 3-5 SWAC) struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-6 at the end of the first quarter.
- The Tigers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 38-17 halftime deficit.
- JSU's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Tigers faced a 61-27 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
- Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.
- JSU narrowed its deficit to 67-36 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Cotton's layup, to shrink the deficit to 67-43 with 45 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
Inside the Numbers
- Jackson State finished with 26 points in the paint, 13 second chance points, 11 fast break points, nine bench points, and six points off 21 SU turnovers.
- The Tigers shot 25 percent (16-for-64) from the field and 44 percent (8-for-18) from the free throw line.
- Southern was led offensively by Mykayla Cunningham and Demonnie Lagway who each finished with 10 points.
- The Jaguars shot 47.9 (23-for-48) percent from the field and 66.7 percent (16-for-24) from the free throw line.
- SU finished with 36 bench points, 32 points in the paint, 16 points off 23 JSU turnovers, 13 second chance points and nine fast break points.
