JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team kept Grambling to just 13.3 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-15 shooting performance on the way to a 61-55 victory at home Saturday afternoon.
The JSU Tigers had three players score in double figures, led by Jaileyah Cotton, who had 15 points and two steals. Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua tacked on 10 points, six rebounds and two steals off the bench and Mikayla Brown chipped in as well with 10 points and six rebounds.
JSU out-rebounded Grambling 40-27 in Saturday's game, paced by eight boards from Jada Patton. The navy and white also pulled down 13 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second chance points.
Jackson State's defense held Grambling to only 37 percent shooting from the field, including 13.3 percent from beyond the arc. The JSU Tigers did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed nine second chance points while Jackson State cleared 27 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (6-15, 4-5) went on a 5-0 run with 3:49 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Derrica McCall, to narrow its deficit to 12-10.
- Grambling answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Lady Tigers down 17-14 entering the second quarter.
- Jackson State then cut the GSU Tigers lead to 22-21 before going on a 5-0 run to take a 26-22 lead.
- JSU proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 37-30 advantage heading into halftime.
- Jackson State saw non-starters score seven of its 23 total points off the bench in the quarter.
- After intermission, Jackson State held on to its advantage and owned a 47-43 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
- JSU played well near the basket, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.
- Grambling State proceeded to tie things up at 55-55 before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run to seize a 61-55 lead with four seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
- JSU took advantage of three Grambling turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
