Pegues and Brown Record Double-doubles at UAPB

PINE BLUFF, Ark.| Rhema Pegues and Mikayla Brown each recorded double-doubles, but the Jackson State women's basketball team fell to Arkansas-Pine Bluff 74-68 on the road Thursday evening.

The Tigers had four players score in double figures, led by Pegues, who put together a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Brown tacked on a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Jada Patton helped out with 13 points off the bench.

Jackson State racked up 15 assists on 25 made field goals. Pegues' five assists led the Tigers.

The JSU defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Thursday's game, forcing 15 UAPB turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Angel Wilkinson's four steals led the way individually for the Tigers.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (6-16, 4-6 SWAC) struggled out of the gate, falling behind 23-11 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Tigers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 42-24 halftime deficit.
  • UAPB continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 60-37 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Pegues, to trim its deficit to 60-42 with 50 seconds to go in the third.
  • JSU was unable to cut further into the deficit, but did not cede ground to UAPB either and entered the fourth quarter trailing 62-44.
  • Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint.
  • The Tigers narrowed their deficit to 72-59 before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Brown's layup, to shrink the deficit to 72-68 with 31 seconds to go in the contest.
  • The Golden Lions responded and outscored the Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 74-68.
  • JSU took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 24 points in the paint.
