JSU Defeats Mississippi Valley State on the Road

ITTA BENA, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team got a much needed road win against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers topped the Delta Devillettes 60-54.
How It Happened
  • Derrica McCall opened the scoring for Jackson State with a good three-point jumper to give the Tigers an early 3-2 lead.
  • JSU began to create some space in the first quarter 16-10 lead over MVSU.
  • Mississippi Valley State took a 17-16 into the second quarter.
  • MVSU led the entire second period despite JSU's attempt to come back late in the quarter 
  • The green and white carried a 32-30 advantage into the half.
  • The Delta Devillettes continued to build on their lead after the half as Sydnei Marshall made a driving layup and a free throw following the drawn foul.
  • Jackson State began to cutaway at the small deficit and eventually tied the game at 35 with a layup from Angel Wilkinson.
  • JSU immediately responded with a three-point dagger from Rhema Pegues to take the 38-35 lead.
  • The Tigers held on to a 47-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  • JSU went on a 7-2 run to open the final period.
  • Jackson State never trailed again on its way to a 64-50 victory.
Inside the Numbers 
  • JSU shot 69.6 percent (16-for-23) from the free throw line and 40 percent (22-for-55) from the field.
  • Jada Patton led JSU offense with 14 points while tacking on four rebounds and a block.
  • Angel Wilkinson registered 12 points and four rebounds in the win and Rhema Pegues finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
  • The Tigers finished with 28 points in the paint, 19 bench points, 18 points off 16 MVSU turnovers, 11 fast break points, and nine second chance points.
  • Sydnei Marshall led Mississippi Valley State's offense with 14 points, while Desiree Smith finished with seven rebounds.
  • The Delta Devillettes shot 71.4 percent (10-for-14) from the free throw line and 32.8 percent (19-for-58) from the field.
  • MVSU finished with 22 points in the paint, 19 bench points, 11 points off 19 JSU turnovers, eight second chance points and five fast break points.
