Jackson State Falls to Bethune-Cookman

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team got a 28-point showing from the bench, but fell 58-50 to the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats at home Thursday evening.

The Tigers had two players score in double figures, led by Jada Patton, who had 13 points, four steals and two blocks. Jaileyah Cotton tacked on 11 points and three steals and Angel Wilkinson added nine points and seven rebounds.

The Jackson State defense caused its share of mistakes in Thursday's game, forcing 17 Bethune-Cookman turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into 19 points on the other end of the floor. Patton's four steals led the way individually for the Lady Tigers.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (7-17, 5-7 SWAC) struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-8 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Bethune-Cookman kept adding to that lead, building a 29-17 advantage before Jackson State went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Cotton, to narrow its deficit to 29-25, a score that would hold until halftime.
  • JSU's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Tigers faced a 46-41 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
  • Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 16 points in the paint.
  • Bethune-Cookman kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 52-45 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 52-50 with 1:33 to go in the contest.
  • B-CU responded and outscored the Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 58-50.
  • The Tigers took advantage of six Bethune-Cookman turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.

Inside the Numbers

  • Jackson State shot 34 percent (17-for-50) from the field and 59.1 percent (13-for-22) from the free throw line.
  • The Tigers finished scored 28 bench points, 22 points in the paint, 19 points off 17 B-CU turnovers, seven fast break points and five second chance points. 
  • Bethune-Cookman shot 38.8 percent (19-for-49) from the field and 93.3 percent (14-for-15) from the free throw line.
  • Daimoni Dorsey led the Wildcats with 15 points while Tyler Butler finished with 16 rebounds.
  • The Wildcats finished with 23 bench points, 20 points in the paint, 12 points off 10 JSU turnovers, eight fast break points, and seven second chance points.
