JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team held Florida A&M to just 16.7 percent from deep in a 2-for-12 shooting performance on the way to a 60-52 win over the Rattlers at home Saturday.
Jaileyah Cotton led the Tigers with 21 points. Jada Patton added nine points, eight rebounds and five steals and Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua helped out with nine points and eight rebounds off of the bench.
Jackson State out-rebounded Florida A&M 38-37 in Saturday's game, paced by Tcheuhchoua's eight boards. The Lady Tigers also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and scored 10 second chance points.
The Jackson State defense held Florida A&M shooters to just 36.8 percent from the field, including 16.7 percent from three-point range. The Lady Tigers also kept Cornelia Ellington to 4-of-14 shooting and nine points in the game.
How It Happened
- After falling behind 12-9, Jackson State (8-17, 6-7 SWAC) went on an 8-0 run with 1:57 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Camryn O'Neil, to take a 17-12 lead.
- The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-15 advantage.
- Jackson State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 17 points.
- JSU could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 32-27.
- After the half, Jackson State cut its deficit to 36-32 before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Cotton, to grab a 39-36 lead with 2:57 to go in the third.
- The Rattlers then rallied to tie it at 42-42 heading into the fourth quarter. Jackson State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 15 total points.
- Jackson State kept it close before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Cotton's layup, to seize a 60-52 lead with 16 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
- JSU took advantage of seven Florida A&M turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.
