Cotton and Tchehchoua Notch Double-doubles as Jackson State Takes Down Alcorn State in Overtime

LORMAN, Miss.| Jaileyah Cotton put the Jackson State women's basketball team ahead for good with 1:23 to go in overtime to help the Tigers to a 52-49 win over Alcorn State on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers had three players score in double figures, led by Cotton, who notched a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Mikayla Brown tacked on 11 points and Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua chipped in as well with a double-double off of the bench with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Led by Tcheuhchoua's five offensive rebounds, Jackson State pulled down 14 boards that resulted in four second chance points.

JSU also forced 20 Alcorn State turnovers in the matchup. The Tigers turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Angel Wilkinson's six steals led the way for Jackson State.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (9-17, 7-7 SWAC) kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 12-11.
  • The Tigers then started off the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Tcheuhchoua, to take a 17-12 lead. 
  • JSU kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 24-19 advantage heading into halftime.
  • Jackson State forced five Alcorn State turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.
  • Alcorn State (14-11, 11-3 SWAC) then took a 33-29 lead following intermission before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jada Patton, to grab a 34-33 lead with 49 seconds to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Tigers added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 37-35 edge.
  • Jackson State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 13 total points.
  • JSU then surrendered that advantage as the Braves forced overtime by tying things up at 42-42 by the end of the fourth.
  • Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring two of its five total points.
  • Alcorn State then snagged a 44-42 advantage with 1:23 left in the first overtime before Jackson State responded by going on an 8-0 run to seize a 50-44 lead with 11 seconds to go in the period.
  • The Braves narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still held on for the 52-49 win.

  • Jackson State got double-doubles from both Jaileyah Cotton and Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua.
  • The Tigers held the Braves to only 28.6 percent shooting from the field.
  • JSU had a stellar day defensively, holding Alcorn State to 13 percent from beyond the arc on 23 attempts.
  • The Tigers shot 11-for16 (68.8 percent) from the free throw line and 18-for-60 (30 percent) from the field.
  • JSU finished with 18 points in the paint, 16 points off 20 Braves turnovers, 10 bench points, eight second chance points and four fast break points.
