JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State's men's and women's track and field teams open the indoor season at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala., for the Blazer and Vulcan Invitationals, hosted by UAB, beginning on Friday, Jan. 9.

The Blazer Invitational kicks off at 1 p.m. with the preliminaries for the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash, long jump, and the men's and women's shot put. Men's and women's shot put opens up the Vulcan Invitational at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Head coach Mark Thorne spoke on his team's mindset heading into the season opener. "We're excited," said Thorne. "This is a meet to get us back in competition mode and get ready for the bulk of the season...It's a collective effort, and everybody needs to come together and pull their own weight."

Notes

• The Tigers will have 47 student-athletes (23 men, 24 women) competing over the weekend, including several medalists from last season.
• Among the returners for the Tigers are Godfrey Kimutai, last season's SWAC Most Outstanding Track Performer, and Callie Calicut, a bronze medalist in the 400-meter hurdles.
• Other medalists from last season competing for the Tigers are: Elijah Blige (gold in discus), Robert Salhab (bronze in discus), and Dominic Turner (bronze in the 800-meters)
• 23 newcomers will compete for the Tigers for the first time, including transfers Kaiden Berry, a SWAC champion in shot put from Prairie View A&M, and Brynesha Bourrage, a former gold medalist in the 400-meter race from West Alabama and Grambling.
