Opening Tip
- Tigers' sophomore Kobe Butler is returning home for the first time in his collegiate career, as the Marrero-native will be part of the roster facing Tulane on Thursday night. The distance from his hometown to the arena... just 11.2 miles.
- Jackson State and Tulane have met just three times in the history of the two schools, with Tulane winning all three [all three games have been played in New Orleans]. No one on the Tigers roster has faced Tulane, as the last time the two met was in 2019.
- Mike Williams returned from a season-ending injury last season [just eight games into the season] to start and lead Jackson State in scoring against No. 19 Texas Tech with 11 points. The son of former Jackson State coach Mo Williams, the sophomore guard scored three fewer points than his brother [Mason] did in an exhibition game against the Red Raiders for Kentucky.
- Daeshun Ruffin returns for his final year after receiving a waiver from the NCAA, earning Preseason honors from the Southwestern Athletic Conference [SWAC], including first-team honors and Preseason Player of the Year honors. Last season, he earned SWAC Player of the Year honors, BOXTOROW National Player of the Year honors, HBCUGO Player of the Year honors, and was named All-Region.
- Ruffin entered the year with 1,312 points after hitting the 1,000-point mark for his career last season despite missing the second half of the final regular season game and both games in the SWAC Championship Tournament. However, he is not the only player on the roster who can hit the mark before they leave Jackson State, as Dorian McMillian entered the season with 667 career points in just two seasons with the Tigers.
- Trey Johnson takes over the helm of Jackson State for his first season, and although he is permanently in the position, he has served in an interim role at both Alabama State and Jackson State when Mo Williams missed due to illness. His most notable appearance in the role came last season at home against Florida A&M on Feb. 14 when the Tigers pulled away from Florida A&M for an 80-60 victory on HBCUGO.
- Jackson State will hit the court two times this season - both non-conference games - at 11 a.m. when they face Baylor [Nov. 18] on ESPN+ and then again when they face Memphis [Dec. 2] on ESPN+.
- The game is the first of four in the state of Louisiana for Jackson State this season [Louisiana Tech, Southern, and Grambling State].
- Jackson State added a pair of D1 transfers this season in Chip Brunt [Northwestern State] and Jayden Williams [UIW], and they return 59% of scoring.
