COMMERCE, Texas | The Jackson State softball team took a 4-3 lead into the sixth inning, but could not hang on, fallingĀ 7-6 to the Marist in its Lion Invitational finale Sunday morning.
Madison McDowell (2-2) took the loss in the circle for Jackson State. Brooklyn Morris started the ballgame and went five innings, surrendering three runs, earned, on five hits, walking none and striking out two.
Offensively, the Tigers were paced by Courtney Little, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a double, a walk and two RBIs. Avelina Mclean furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Gabrielle Willis also contributed for Jackson State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jackson StateĀ (4-4)Ā got on the scoreboard first, starting in the fourth inning.
- The Tigers's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run groundout off the bat of Little.
- MaristĀ (5-4) then rallied to score six runs and take a 6-4 lead before the Tigers got back on the board in the seventh.
- JSUĀ managed to push across two runs in the inning, which evened the score at 6-6.
- The Red Foxes then scored one time in the bottom half of the seventh to break the tie and grab the 7-6 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Jackson State's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed four runs across.
- Four Jackson State hitters had multiple base knocks in the ballgame.
- JSU's pitchers faced 30 Marist hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out two.
- The Tigers drew four walks from Marist pitching.
- Marist was led offensively by Haley Ahr, who went 4 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs.
- Stella Blanchard led the Red Foxes pitching staff, throwing 3.2 innings of two-run ball.
