Tigers fall to No. 16 Ole Miss in midweek contest

OXFORD, Miss. | Jackson State dropped a 18-3 contest to No. 16 Ole Miss at Swayze Field on Wednesday night in non-conference action.

Jackson State (1-3) jumped ahead in the top of the first with a pair of runs when Tyree Reed scored on a wild pitch to start the scoring, followed by an RBU single from Pierre Cabral for the early 2-0 lead. However, Ole Miss (5-0) scored three in the bottom half of the first inning before a nine-run third inning put the game away. Jackson State would another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Robert Tate Jr. to trim the deficit to 12-3.

Trae Burton (0-1) suffered the loss in his first career start, working 2.1 innings and allowing eight runs on four hits while striking out three. Christian Delgado, the third of five pitchers on the day, was the most effective as worked 2.0 innngs allowed one hit before departing in the bottom of the sixth. Meanwhile, the Tigers were held to four hits by four different players (by four Ole Miss pitchers).

  • 1st inning (bottom) - Judd Utermark homered to left field, 2 RBI (1-2 KKB); Dom Decker scored. Hayen Federico walked, RBI (3-1 BBBKB); Tate Sirmans advanced to second; Tristan Bissetta advanced to third; Collin Reuter scored; Ole Miss 3-2.
  • 3rd inning (bottom) - Bissetta homered to left center, RBI (0-1 K). Federico advanced to second on a wild pitch; Daniel Pacella advanced to third on a wild pitch; Sirmans scored on a wild pitch. Brayden Randle singled through the right side, 2 RBI (3-1 BFBB); Federico scored; Pacella scored. Reuter singled to left field, 2 RBI (0-2 FSF); Will Furniss advanced to second; Decker scored; Randle scored.
