VERO BEACH, Fla. | A late rally came up short for Jackson State in the final game of the Andre Dawson Classic, falling 8-7 to Grambling State at the Jackie Robinson Training Facility on Sunday morning.
Jackson State (3-4) trailed 8-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh before they reeled off a six-run inning to pull to within one at 8-7 beginning with an RBI single by Hederick Torres to score Diego Melendez. Following a bases-loaded walk to Troy Wilson Jr., before Robert Tate Jr. connected on a three-run double to trim the score to 8-6. Tyree Reed added an RBI single to trim the deficit to 8-7 with two outs before the inning ended. However, Payton Allen came on for Grambling State to record the final four outs of the game.
Tate finished the day 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI, while Diego Melendez finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to help pace an eight-hit attack. Coron Davis (0-1), the first of five pitchers used on the day by Jackson State, suffered the loss working 5.0 innings and allowed four runs on four hits, while striking out four.
