BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Jackson State closed out the second day of competition on Sunday at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Indoor Championships with the men securing a second-place finish, while the women finished ninth in the final team standings.
The Tigers finished with 97 points behind Texas Southern (108) for second place. They added to their medal total with
Sedgwrick Pitts Jr. and
Godfrey Kimutai both making it to the podium. Pitts Jr. claimed the silver medal in the 200m dash with a time of 21.31, while Kimutai made his second trip to the podium over the weekend with a third-place finish in the 1-mile race, clocking in at 4:20.75. This time was also a new personal record for Kimutai.
Eric Lagat and
Collins Kibet also set personal records in the 1-mile, with respective times of 4:26.54 and 4:27.52. Lagat recorded a personal record of 15:27.68 in the 5k as well.
Day two for the Lady Tigers saw them record several personal bests and season bests. A day after breaking the school record in weight throw, freshman
Malayna Mallory recorded a season best in the shot put with a 12.17m throw. Three jumpers recorded season bests in the triple jump with
Kierstin Mumford (11.49m),
Ashanti Patton (11.39m), and
Jacquel Williams (11.30m) all hitting new marks. In the 800m finals,
Kaylin Jackson set a new personal record with a time of 2:13.59, as
Amara Hawkins-Quinones recorded a season best coming in at 2:15.21. Jackson and Hawkins-Quinones also set a season best in the 4x400m relay alongside
Callie Calicut and
Karina Griffin.
