Tigers Hold on for Series Opening Win at Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.| The Jackson State softball team used a fast start and a complete-game effort in the circle from Jorgina Gant to secure a 3-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Bethune-Cookman on Friday evening at Sunnyland Park.

The Tigers plated all the runs they would need early, then leaned on steady pitching and timely defense to hold off a late push from the Wildcats.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (19-16, 11-3 SWAC) wasted no time jumping ahead in the top of the first inning.
  • After loading the bases with two outs, Brooklyn Morris delivered the key swing of the game, lining a two-run single to left field to bring home Meah Almaraz and Jace Jackson for a 2-0 lead.
  • The early cushion proved critical in what turned into a tightly contested matchup.
  • Bethune-Cookman (13-25, 9-7 SWAC) chipped away with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but the Tigers responded with an insurance run in the top of the seventh to maintain control at 3-1 before holding on down the stretch.
  • The Wildcats threatened late, scoring in the seventh inning and putting pressure on the Tigers' defense, but JSU was able to close the door and secure the one-run victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • In the circle, Jorgina Gant turned in a strong complete-game performance, going all seven innings while allowing just two runs on seven hits.
  • She struck out three and worked around traffic throughout the night to earn her eighth win of the season.
  • Offensively, Jackson State tallied eight hits, led by Jackson, Almaraz and Gabrielle Willis, who each recorded two hits.
  • Almaraz added a double and an RBI, while Morris finished with a game-high two RBIs.
