Tigers Drop B-CU Series on the Road

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | Jackson State delivered a gritty performance Saturday afternoon, but a late-inning swing shifted momentum as Bethune-Cookman claimed a 4-1 decision at Sunnyland Park.

The Tigers showcased consistent offensive pressure throughout the contest, outhitting the Wildcats 9-5, but were unable to capitalize in key moments, leaving 10 runners stranded.

Game 1: B-CU, 4 JSU, 1

  • Jackson State (19-17, 11-4 SWAC) broke through first in the top of the fifth inning.
  • After Mackenzie Barney reached and Ka'Liyah Gipson advanced into scoring position, Jace Jackson delivered a clutch RBI single to left field, giving the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
  • Jackson continued to threaten offensively behind a strong day from Jackson, who went 2-for-4 with a double and the team's lone RBI.
  • Gabrielle Willis added a double, while Ariana Murillo, Meah Almaraz, Nakayla Williams, and Brooklyn Morris each contributed hits as part of the Tigers' nine-hit effort.
  • In the circle, Brooklyn Morris kept Bethune-Cookman off balance for much of the game.
  • The left-hander turned in a solid outing, holding the Wildcats scoreless through five innings while limiting traffic and inducing weak contact.
  • However, the Wildcats capitalized in the bottom of the sixth, stringing together timely hits to plate four runs and take control late.
  • Despite the setback, Jackson State's ability to generate offense and control the game early highlighted a competitive showing on the road. The Tigers' defense and pitching kept the contest within reach until the late surge.

Game 2: B-CU, 8 JSU, 1

Jackson State dropped the second game of its SWAC series doubleheader Saturday afternoon, falling 8-1 to Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The Tigers finished with 10 hits, but the Wildcats used a six-run third inning to seize control and added two more runs in the fifth.

  • Jackson State (19-18, 11-5 SWAC) threatened early and often, putting runners on base throughout the afternoon, but was unable to cash in consistently despite outhitting some innings with steady traffic. Jace Jackson led the Tigers at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, while Gabrielle Willis drove in Jackson State's lone run.
  • Ariana Murillo scored the Tigers' only run, and Nakayla Williams added a double as part of JSU's 10-hit effort.
  • After both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings, Bethune-Cookman broke through in the bottom of the third.
  • The Wildcats capitalized on their opportunities and defensive miscues, pushing across six runs in the frame to build separation.
  • Jackson State answered in the top of the fifth, when Murillo came around to score and Willis delivered the RBI, trimming the deficit to 6-1.
  • Bethune-Cookman responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and kept the Tigers off the board the rest of the way.
  • In the circle, Jayden Rutledge got the start for Jackson State, while Addison Jennings and Jorgina Gant also saw action in relief.
  • Gant provided a solid closing inning, allowing just one hit over the final frame.
