HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Jackson State jumped out on top early before using an eight-run fifth inning to pull away for an 18-1 victory over Alabama A&M in game one of its Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series at Bulldog Field on Friday afternoon.
Jackson State (18-22, 8-11 SWAC) jumped on top early with two runs in the first before three more in the third to push the lead to 6-0. The Tigers then added eight more in the fifth inning to pull away using just four hits including a two-run home run from Tyree Reed - his seventh of the season, tying him for the team lead with Pierre Cabral. The Tigers pounded out 18 hits with four players picking up multiple hits including three with three hits each. Robert Tate Jr. led the way finishing 3-for-4 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI, while Cabral finished 3-for-6 including a pair of doubles with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr. also finished 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored.
Shemar Harris finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and run scored, while Diego Melendez added three RBI and recorded a double.
Talmadge Davis (1-2) picked up the win with a complete game effort, allowing just one run on three hits. He also recorded seven strikeouts and walked just two, giving him 18 strikeouts in his last two outings.
