Tigers Top Hornets in Series Opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala.| Jackson State pushed two runs across in the fourth inning and leaned on a complete-game effort from Jorgina Gant to edge Alabama State, 2–1, on the road Friday evening.

The Tigers finished with four hits on the night but capitalized on defensive miscues in the decisive fourth inning.

How It Happened

  • After Brooklyn Morris led off with a single for Jackson State (18-14, 10-2 SWAC), a pair of Alabama State errors allowed Ariah Hill (pinch runner) to score the game's first run.
  • Later in the inning, Avelina McLean delivered the only RBI of the game for Jackson State, lining a double to right-center to bring home Gabrielle Willis and extend the lead to 2–0.
  • That was all the support Gant would need as the right-hander went the distance, allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out six and walking one across seven innings.
  • She consistently worked out of trouble, stranding eight Alabama State runners and holding the Hornets scoreless through the first six frames.
  • Alabama State (13-26, 7-6 SWAC) threatened throughout, collecting seven hits, including multi-hit efforts from Jaibriel Terrell and Addison Giles.
  • The Hornets finally broke through in the seventh when Terrell drove in a run with a double, cutting the deficit to 2–1.
  • However, Gant closed the door from there, retiring the final hitters to secure the win.

Inside the Numbers

  • Offensively, Willis, Morris, McLean, and Ariana Murillo accounted for Jackson State's four hits, while McLean's RBI double proved to be the difference.
  • Despite being outhit 7–4, Jackson State's ability to take advantage of three Alabama State errors ultimately swung the game in its favor.
  • The Tigers finished with two runs and four hits.
  • The Hornets recorded seven hits, three errors and one run.
  • Gant pitched all seven innings and struck out six batters.
