BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | No. 7 seed Jackson State dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 opening round game to No. 2 seed Southern in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Baseball Championships at Rickwood Field on Wednesday night.
Jackson State led most of the way until Southern tied the game in the eighth inning. The Tigers took the lead in the top of the 10th inning when Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr. was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in a run, before the Jaguars used a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to finish off the win.
Tyree Reed led Jackson State (26-26) at the plate, finishing 4-for-5, while Shemar Harris finished 2-for-4. Jayden Lopez, who did factor in the decision, went 6.1 innings, allowing one run off one hit with seven strikeouts on 106 pitches before giving way to Jaedeyn Edwards after facing one batter in the seventh. Edwards worked 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on one hits; while Derek Arrocha (7-5) suffered the loss working 0.2 innings allowing one run on one hit.Â

- 10th inning (bottom) - Beny Bikar Jr. doubled to right center, RBI (0-1 K); Edward Gregory Jr. scored. Jaylon Lucky reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop, RBI (0-0); KJ White out at second ss to 2b; Xavier Bradley advanced to third; Bikar scored.; Southern 4-3.
