JACKSON, Miss. | Jayden Lopez pitched the second consecutive complete game for Jackson State in its series against Alcorn State as the Tigers won 14-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action on Sunday afternoon at Braddy Field.
Lopez (5-3) went 7.0 innings allowing just one unearned run on five hits with 15 strikeouts - the second consecutive game in the series that Jackson State (20-23, 11-12 SWAC) has recorded 15 strikeouts. The senior has recorded 29 strikeouts in his last three outings (19.1 innings).
He got some help in the bottom of the first when the Tigers used four hits to score six runs including a two-run home run by Shemar Harris, his first career home run, to left field. The Tigers also used an RBI single from Diego Melendez and a two-run double by Hederick Torres to jump ahead early, 6-0. They added four more in the second with RBI double by Pierre Cabral, RBI singles by Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr. and Torres, and a sacrifice fly by Tyshon Patty.
Jackson State added four more runs in the third with a two-run double from Melendez, an RBI single from Melendez, and an RBI double by Patty to push the lead to 14-0 at the time.
The Tigers collected 13 hits, with nine of the 10 batters who made a trip to the plate getting a base hit led by Melendez who finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored, and Torrres who finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored.
