JACKSON, Miss. | The NCAA announced the Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) for institutions, and Jackson State bowling and men's tennis recording a perfect score of 1000.
Along with the two perfect scores, several sports registered a 970 or above, while football registered the highest APR in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) with a 961, and finished with the second-highest APR among HBCU football programs (North Carolina Central). The program is also the third-highest in the state of Mississippi behind only Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
All 14 of Jackson State's sports programs are currently in good standing established by the NCAA's standards, while nine sports recorded a perfect single-year score of 1000 for the 2024-25 year. Those sports include men's basketball, men's cross country, men's tennis, men's track & field, bowling, women's cross country, women's tennis, women's track & field, and volleyball.Â
"Our student-athletes continue to strive in their areas of competition and in the classroom," Jackson State Vice President/Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson said. "I am extremely proud of the effort they continue to put into the classroom, and our coaches and academic staff work tirelessly to help maintain that level of success. We continue to set the standard in academic excellence."Â
The only student-athletes who figure into a team and institution's APR are those receiving athletic financial aid. An undergraduate student-athlete receiving athletic financial aid has the opportunity to earn two points each semester – an eligibility point and a retention point. Thus, an undergraduate student-athlete has the opportunity to earn up to four points each academic year for their team and institution. A graduate student-athlete receiving athletic financial aid has the opportunity to earn one point each semester – the eligibility point signifying the student-athlete earned six credit hours for that semester. A graduate student has the opportunity to earn up to two points each academic year for their team.
