JACKSON, Miss. | Three Tigers went undefeated in the season's first fall tournament over the weekend as Jackson State hosted the Tiger Invite on Sept. 11-12.
Reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player of the Year
Paula Corbalan started strong with a 6-1 doubles victory alongside
Tiara Alvarez, battling Co-Lin's Ruri Takeuchi and Ivet Balague on Friday morning. Corbalan carried that momentum through the day, defeating Emily Buchanan (Mississippi Christian) and Ivanna De Gregorio (Alcorn). She teamed with
Mariia Iordanova on Saturday morning and picked up another doubles win this time against Alcorn's Amelia Tatafu and Natalija Nikolic, 6-1. Corbalan capped off her perfect weekend with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Dillard's Gia Pereira.
Freshman
Larisa Tudora also went undefeated in her first action as a Tiger. The Castellón de la Plana native recorded wins over Co-Lin's Domencia Gruezo (2-6, 6-2, 10-6), Mississippi Christian's Esila Toklu (6-7, 6-3, 10-7), and Alcorn's Natalija Nikolic (6-2, 6-4). She also teamed with
Polina Georgieva to go 3-0 in doubles competition.
On the men's side, freshman
Devesh Sarawanan went undefeated in singles play. Sarawanan recorded wins on Friday against Jose Zenteno (Alcorn) and Jack Farrel (Co-Lin) in 7-6(4), 6-3 and 6-1, 6-3 decisions, respectively. He closed out the tournament with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-0, 10-7 win against Dillard's Majdi Abdelwaheed.
As a team, the Tigers tallied 32 total wins across the two days of competition.
