Jackson State Nearly Defeats Miami in Season Opener

Box Score CORAL GABLES, Fla. – SWAC Preseason Player of the Year Dayzsha Rogan scored 17 points and JSU nearly rallied to defeat Miami and dropped a close 72-67 contest.
 
JSU used a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter and an Ameshya Williams bucket at the 2:20 mark knotted the game at 63-63.
 
Williams, a finalist for the 2020-21 Lisa Leslie Award, dropped 18 points on 9-for-19 shooting from the field and grabbed nine rebounds. The Gulfport, Mississippi native also recorded two blocked shots and three steals.
 
Jariyah Covington added nine points and went 5-for-7 at the free-throw line. Miya Crump and Keshuna Luckett each scored eight points and Luckett handed out a game-high 10 assists.
 
As a team, JSU shot 37.9 percent (25-for-66) from the field, while UM shot 36.5 percent (23-for-63) from the floor.
 
JSU forced UM into 19 turnovers, which the Tigers turned into 21 points.
 
The Blue and White return to action November 16 and host Nicholls State.
