Women's basketball Coasts to Win Over Mississippi Valley State

ITTA BENA, MISS - Ameshya Williams-Holliday recorded her ninth consecutive and 15th double-double on the season scoring 20 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and protected the paint with 5 blocks to lead five players in double figures lifting Jackson State to a 88-54 win over Mississippi Valley State Saturday afternoon at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.

Keshuna Luckett, Daja Woodard, and Jariyah Covington each finished with 12 points while senior LaMiralce Sims chipped in with 10 points and 8 rebounds as the Lady Tigers (12-6, 10-0 SWAC)) coasted to a 34-point victory.

Mississippi Valley State (2-16, 1-9 SWAC) jumped out to an early 5-2 lead with 7:03 left to play to begin the contest. JSU immediately answered with a 12-0 run which was fueled by Williams-Holliday, Luckett, and Miya Crump. By the time the Devilettes answered with a Ronni Williams free-throw with 1:22 remaining in the opening quarter, JSU had seized the momentum that it never surrendered.

After leading 17-9 through the first quarter, JSU upped the advantage to 39-25 at the half. The Lady Tigers hit 13-of-30 shots in the opening two quarters in large part to the play of Luckett, Williams-Holliday, and some sparks off the bench.

The Lady Tigers opened the second half on a 14-3 scoring run extending their lead to 53-28 with 5:59 remaining in the third. JSU's biggest lead in the game was 76-38 midway through the fourth quarter and would go on to outscore MVSU 49-29 in the second half to secure the victory.

"I'm ecstatic that we were able to pull out the victory despite bad moments within the game," head coach Tomekia Reed said. "I felt we didn't play to our full potential, but I'm thankful we were resilient and fought through challenges. To have five players in double figures shows that we are growing in small areas."
